Meeting the needs of Victims of Crime - seeking conference paper submissions

The Australian Institute of Criminology and the NSW Department of Justice and Attorney General will host a groundbreaking conference on meeting the needs of victims of crime – and how building the evidence helps us do that.

For more info see
http://www.aic.gov.au/events/aic%20upcoming%20events/2011/victim.aspx

The conference will bring together delegates to discuss what research tells us about victims’ rights and needs in all their diversity.  Delegates will exchange ideas and solutions, examine promising practices and discuss challenges in meeting the needs of victims of crime.

The issues are complex.  Individuals and communities are affected by a wide range of crimes such as family and sexual violence, but also terrorism, break and enter, homicide, fraud, home invasion, elder abuse, road trauma and armed robbery.

International and national speakers will share their expertise and knowledge. International speakers include:

Dr Jonathan Doak

Director of the Criminal Justice Research Group, Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University in the UK.

Jonathan has published widely in the fields of victimology, criminal evidence and restorative justice with a particular interest in international benchmarking and on the impact of international harmonisation on law and policymaking at domestic levels. His recent book is: Victims’ Rights, Human Rights and Criminal Justice: Re-conceiving the Role of Third Parties (2008).

Professor Jane Ursel

Professor of Sociology, the University of Manitoba in Canada.

Jane is also the Director of RESOLVE (Research and Education for Solutions to Violence and Abuse), a tri-provincial research network with offices at the Universities of Manitoba, Regina and Calgary.

Professor Ursel is the principal investigator on two longitudinal studies: the Winnipeg Family Violence Court Project now in its 20 year of operation, and 'the Healing Journey' which has involved seven waves of interviews with 690 women who had experienced violence in their intimate relationships.

Call for abstracts.

Contributions are invited from participants that possess knowledge and practice experience relevant to the conference themes. Presenters may include:

  • Program evaluators
  • Researchers and academics
  • Policy developers
  • Practitioners in the field
  • People who have experienced crime.

Topics may include, but are not limited to, the themes outlined in the conference program.

Abstracts must be submitted by 5.00 pm Friday , 25 February 2011 using the abstract submission form.

Preparing an abstract

The abstract should outline the subject of the presentation in no more than 250 words. Additionally, it should include a concise title and the full names and contact details of the authors. The presenting author should be clearly identified. A brief personal biography (approximately 100 words) from the presenting author must also be included. Please do not include any acknowledgments, figures or references in the abstract. Please provide details if you have presented this paper previously (i.e. conference, conference location and date).

Please indicate on your abstract submission form if it should be considered for a 30-minute presentation (20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes questions) or a one-hour workshop or panel discussion.

Completed abstract submission forms should be returned by email, fax or post to:
